Hello,
This is the V1.1 of the Limedigest newsletter where we bring you articles / insights from across the web. There is no bias towards a particular geography (although we might have a subconscious one as we are based in India) or towards a particular source. These are posts / articles which we have enjoyed reading and think will be relevant to you in varying degrees if you have any interest in technology. In some cases the posts are instantiations of the larger news stories themselves – and there might be better coverage for the same. The thought is to ensure you don’t miss out on the news itself.
As this is a nascent effort, we would greatly appreciate if you can send in your thoughts / comments to pratyush@limedigest.com to help us improve this further.
The articles in this newsletter are in no particular order or priority.

Analysis: Even in emerging markets, Nokia's star is fading
Nokia phones once took pride of place in Manish Khatri's Mumbai store, but now models made by Samsung Electronics get the limelight.
Comment - Nokia has always touted its huge presence in the emerging markets as a winner still - but that is changing. Is this the slow slide towards inevitable ignominy for the Finnish giant?
Ubislate7+ Tablet Launched, Priced at INR 2999
Datwind UbiSlate has been announced and the price of Ubislate7+ and 7C is Rs. 2,999/ and Rs 3,999 respectively. Both the tablets are powered by Cortex A8 800 Mhz processor, 256MB RAM and have an 800×480 pixel resistive touchscreen and run on Android 2.3.
Comment - Finally the Ubislate is launched. Is this going to be the game changer that it has been tom-tommed to be? We think its an overhyped, mostly clunky piece of hardware. Did they lose sight of customer delight to adhere to the constraints of the price point?

Multiple new products, investments and its always a good thing for the ecosystem which matures with time. Indian tech industry is changing at a rapid pace, its only fair to go back and recheck those predictions and ensure to keep it up with the times.

GSMA:TRAI Recommendations On Spectrum Auction Would Curtail Investment In Mobile Broadband,Increase Prices
The global mobile industry body, GSMA or GSM Association has strongly reacted to the TRAI’s recommendations on spectrum auction, saying that the proposals disregard international best practice in spectrum policy and jeopardize the investment of billions of US dollars in new mobile infrastructure in the telecom sector.
Comment - Of late the TRAI has been draconian - atleast in terms of the rumors that have come out. Will such restrictions kill the golden goose - read telecom - in India? On similar lines - a post on the high entry barrier in telecom

The Scarcest Resource at Startups is Management Bandwidth
When you work inside a startup with lots of clever and motivated staff you’re never short of good ideas that you can implement. It’s tempting to take on new projects, new features, new geographies, new speaking opportunities, whatever. Each one incrementally sounds like a good idea, yet collectively they end up punishing undisciplined teams. I like to counsel that the best teams are often defined by what they choosenot to do.
Comment - Very apt post on conserving management bandwidth and optimizing resources at a startup. On similar lines, a post on how skills have always been and will remain a scarce commodity.
Social Networking And Gaming Mobile Apps Are Now Neck-And-Neck For Time Spent On Android, iOS
In another sign that something fundamental is changing on the iOS and Android platforms, mobile analytics provider Flurry has found that consumers are spending as much time in social networking apps as they are in mobile games.
Comment - Good post on Techcrunch on how Social Networking and Gaming are almost equal now in terms of time spent. Some good stats for companies who work in either.
Data Driven Decisions for Startups
“If you don’t have any facts, we’ll just use my opinion.” – Jim Barksdale (former president and CEO of Netscape).
Comment - How important are data driven decisions in companies? Steve Jobs was infamous for turning down a lot of "no brainers" which data jockeys presented. Should data be the only criterion?
How Long Can Apple Remain King Of Mobile Devices?
Think back over the last decade. Twelve years ago, Motorola one of the leaders in the development of the entire cell phone industry, was clearly #1. It invented the flip phone and then disrupted the market with its super thin RAZR that drove it to a peak market share in the mid-30’s. Its biggest strength was its enormous patent portfolio.
Comment - An insightful article on history and future - of mobile phones in general and Apple in particular. Can the largest tech company continue its breathtaking rise?
